Peach Phurappa

EngD Project Area: Collective HVDC control visualisation and optimisation

Industrial Partner: SSE HVDC Centre

Educational and Professional Background

Peach achieved her Master of Engineering from University of Exeter upon completing the Energy Engineering program in 2020. She then joined Inyanga Maritime and HydroWing under the Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) programme to work on the development of control system for a novel turbine control hub for tidal turbines.

What Attracted You to Studying with IDCORE?

Upon completing her KTP project, Peach has joined IDCORE to expand her knowledge and expertise in control systems for offshore renewable technology as well as the control and protection in other areas. The industrial aspect of IDCORE is the key motivation for Peach to join IDCORE as she sees the benefit of working on a research project with a partnered company to deliver real-world solutions to the offshore renewable energy sector.

What Attracted You to the Renewable Energy Sector? What Aspects of the Industry Do You Find Most Inspiring, Interesting, or Important for the Future?

Peach has a strong belief in the transformative potential of renewable energy to address some of the most pressing global challenges, such as climate change, energy security, and sustainable development. The innovative nature of the industry, means that things are constantly evolving, with advancements in renewable technologies, especially from the offshore sector.  Beyond the technical aspects, Peach is also inspired by the sector's ability to harmonize economic growth within the sector during the net zero transition, creating a path towards a cleaner, greener future.

What Ambition Would You Like to Fulfil as a Research Engineer?

As a Research Engineer, Peach would like to enhance and employ her skills in control engineering to accelerate the implementation of the innovative solutions that enhance the efficiency, reliability, and integration of renewable energy into the grid, bringing the generation from offshore to the end users onshore. With her continuing effort, Peach aims to deliver her Engineering Doctorate research with the goal of contributing to the optimisation of the multi-vendor-multi-terminal HVDC system performance, enabling seamless and stable power transmission from offshore wind farms. Ultimately, Peach aspires to play a key role in accelerating the adoption of the HVDC system by overcoming technical challenges and driving the industry towards a sustainable and electrified future.

Peach's reasearch progress is described in the poster to the right - with this poster, Peach was the winner of the IDCORE Company Day Poster Prize, Feb 2024!
