Programme start date: 16th September 2013
EngD Thesis Title: Improved uncertainty analysis for tidal energy project development
Educational background
Mechanical Engineering (MEng) from University of Bath with final year research project titled 'Upscaling offshore wind energy - How big can we go?'.
Industrial experience
12 months working for GL Garrad Hassan's energy and development services team. I was responsible for producing wind maps using a computational wind flow model and carrying out associated R&D tasks. I also did a 3 month summer placement with RES, where I was in charge of optimising the methodology for carrying out wind climatology studies.
What attracted you to studying with IDCORE?
The combination of the bespoke taught modules and the opportunity to do highly interesting research in a commercial environment.
What attracted you to offshore renewables industry?/ What aspects of the industry do you find most inspiring, interesting or important for the future?
The challenges and opportunities on offer in such a young and rapidly developing industry are highly attractive to me. I am inspired by the huge progress made in this field in the past few years and I am interested in understanding the barriers (technical, commercial and political) that are currently preventing us from exploiting this enormous renewable resource at a larger scale.
