EngD Project Title: A numerical wave tank for testing Offshore Wind Turbines: extensions and validation of a model based on the highly nonlinear High-Order Spectral (HOS) method
Industrial Partner: EDF
Educational & Professional Background
I have completed a Masters of Engineering (MEng) degree at the University of Edinburgh (UoE). Throughout my degree I had the opportunity to attend a year abroad at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) as well as a 9 month industrial placement at Altair Engineering, which was later acquired by Siemens. During these experiences I developed an immense interest in research, especially in the fields of numerical modelling and hydrodynamics.
What attracted me to studying with IDCORE?
Even though I developed an interest in research I was not convinced that I wanted a career in academia, instead I was hoping for a career in the renewables sector. Therefore, what attracted me to IDCORE is its unique blend of the academic and industry sectors. With IDCORE I am completing my research within the R&D department of a very prestigious organization; EDF. This is especially important to me since I know that my research will have a direct impact in industry, and more specifically the offshore renewables industry. Moreover, I am hoping that IDCORE will enable me to continue with research after my doctoral degree, but in industry as part of another R&D department instead of academia.
Other Benefits of IDCORE
Even though combining industry with academia was the main reason that attracted me to IDCORE there are other benefits to joining IDCORE. One of these is the fact that the modules during the first year of IDCORE give you a very broad background on the offshore renewables sector, that will help guide you towards the area you want to specialize in. Moreover, since IDCORE is a partnership between industrial and four universities, you have a vast amount of resources and support at your disposal. Finally, since IDCORE begun in 2011 it has placed 107 students in 57 companies, creating a well-established community that is recognized in the industry and can offer valuable future support.
